Good-natured, bouncy and intelligent – here comes the Bearded Collie!

History of the Bearded Collie

Bearded Collies are working dogs, used to herd both sheep and cattle, often in harsh conditions.

Legend tells of a Polish Lowland Sheepdog, which was abandoned on a beach in Scotland. This dog went on to breed with native Scottish herding dogs, producing a Bearded Collie.

However, the modern Bearded Collie, or Beardie, was born in 1944. Mrs G. Olive Willison began breeding the dogs after developing an interest.  Jeannie of Bothkennar and Bailie of Bothkennar are the mother and father of the modern breed.

The breed became popular in the second part of the 20th century. Beardies were first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1977.

Their popularity soared when a Bearded Collie called Potterdale Classic at Moonhill (try saying that after a few drinks) won Best in Show at Crufts in 1989.

Appearance

Beardies are medium-sized dogs with adorable facial hair, floppy ears and shaggy coat. They have a kind and wise expression.

They come in a variety of colours – slate, brown, blue and fawn – all in a combination with white. Beneath their shaggy coat, they have a softer undercoat. They need regular brushing to avoid tangles and mats forming.

Temperament

Bearded Collies are athletic, playful and intelligent. They are known for their excited “Beardie bounce” as they jump up and down on their front feet.

They require lots of exercise. Walks, runs, bike rides and hikes are all great for these high energy boys and girls.

Beardies are great with children and fit in well in active homes with access to outdoor spaces for running and playing games. They are gorgeous family dogs who love their humans.

Do you have a Beardie? What do you love most about these sweet-natured tail waggers?
