Incredibly cute, energetic and loyal – here comes the Glen of Imaal Terrier!

History Of The Glen Of Imaal Terrier

Glens were originally bred in Ireland to hunt rats, badgers and foxes. They date back to the 16th century and lived in the mountains of Co. Wicklow, Ireland. They are one of nine native Irish dog breeds.

As well as hunting, the Glen helped out in the kitchen! They worked as turnspit dogs – using their strong legs to move the wheel that turned the spit over the fire, cooking the meals.

The Glen of Imaal Terrier Club of Ireland was formed in 1933. The dog was recognised by the Irish Kennel Club in 1934 and by the American Kennel Club in 1975.

Appearance

The Glen is a sturdy, substantial little dog. A “big dog on short legs”, it is about 41 – 46cm high at the withers. These dogs grow in three stages and can take up to four years to be fully mature.

Their double coat consists of a soft undercoat with a wiry outercoat on the body and a wavy soft coat on the head and legs. They can be wheaten colour or blue, both encompassing a range of shades.

The “Glen Sit”

A unique posture, not often seen in other breeds of dog, is the “Glen sit”. The dog sits on its rear end and holds its body fully vertical. This of course, only adds to their cuteness as they look like teddy bears.

Temperament Of The Glen Of Imaal Terrier

Glens love activity but are not necessarily looking for a long jog. With their short legs, they enjoy a walk at their pace.

As a family dog, the Glen of Imaal Terrier is loyal, affection and gentle. They are docile and quiet compared to other terriers. While they are small dogs, Glens are adventurous, spirited and wonderful guardians of the home.
