The Glen of Imaal Terrier is an energetic, independent dog breed named after the remote valley in County Wicklow, Ireland from which they originate. The Glen is a skilled and clever hunter who has been bred to hunt foxes and badgers. They are friendly family pets, kind, and loving towards their humans.

1. The Glen of Imaal Terrier has a rough double coat.
Glens have a wiry outer coat and a soft undercoat, and they need to be brushed two to three times a week to avoid matting, especially around the ears, neck, legs, and belly. They should also be stripped two or three times a year. Though they do shed seasonally, the shedding will be minimal as long as they receive this care.
2. It is a coat of many colours!
The Glen’s coat has several different colours, including cream, red, silver, and black; and brown, grey, and white.
3. They are renowned for their gentle but sturdy character
The breed originated in Ireland, where it was used as a hunting companion. As such, they were developed to work quietly and silently. Because of this, they do not bark often. In fact, some glens are described as having a “silent temperament.”
4. They are fast learners
These dogs are known for being independent and stubborn, but with early puppy and obedience training, they can become excellent companions. Glen of Imaal dogs intelligence and speed of learning make them well-suited for agility, obedience, and earth dog competitions.
5. Glens need exercise, but not too much!
These dogs aren’t going to be good running buddies. They enjoy walking at their own pace. Though they’re just as happy running around inside a house, apartment, and yard. They’re self-reliant and creative enough to entertain themselves.
