Native Dogs Of England
My illustration tour of the doggy world continues. We move on from Welsh breeds to the native dogs of England.
The first domesticated dogs were likely to have originated somewhere in Asia around 10,000 years ago, but England was not too far behind. The remains of the first recorded domesticated dog in England were found at the Star Carr Early Mesolithic site in Yorkshire. This site dates back over 8000 years.
Native English Dogs
The types of dog breeds originating in England are many and varied and I’ll be writing about, drawing and illustrating all of them (except the extinct ones!).
A quick note to say dogs from the English – Scottish borders are open to debate about which side of the border they originally came from, but I’m researching as I go. I have already drawn dogs of Scottish origin and you can see them here.
England is home to some of the world’s most popular dog breeds including:
- Old English Sheepdog
- Beagle
- Greyhound
- Yorkshire Terrier
- English Bulldog
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be drawing these and about 20-something more.
