History of the Wheaten Terrier

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a breed of dog that originated in Ireland. (One of nine native Irish dogs) They are considered to be one of the oldest terrier breeds in existence.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) began registering Wheaten Terriers in 1887. In 2010, the breed was ranked 11th in AKC registrations.

Wheaten Appearance

Wheatens are known for their soft, silky coats and friendly personalities. They are medium-sized dogs. The Male is typically 46–48 cm, and the Female is 43–46 cm at the withers.

Wheaten Terrier puppies come in various shades of brown, red or white. Their muzzles and ears will acquire mahogany or dark brown colour. The wheaten puppy coat gradually becomes pale, reaching nearly white as they age.

Temperament

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has a gentle temperament and good personality. They are often considered to be the perfect family dog because they are so friendly and loving.
