Welsh Sheepdog Fun Facts
Intelligent, inquisitive and hardworking – here comes the Welsh Sheepdog!
History
The Welsh Sheepdog is a breed of herding dog that originated in Wales. They were first mentioned in manuscripts over 800 years ago.
In the 18th century, drovers used Welsh Sheepdogs to herd and guard sheep and to provide game on the route to market.
Over time the Border Collie has almost replaced the Welsh Sheepdog for herding sheep in Wales. However, breeding work and programs have been carried out to conserve and protect the numbers of indigenous Welsh Sheepdogs.
Appearance
The Welsh Sheepdog does not have a uniform look. It is more about their behaviour and working abilities. However, although they vary in build, size and colour, they often look somewhat like a collie.
Coat colours include black-and-white, red-and-white or tricolour, and merle markings. The coat can be short or fairly long, and the ears are pricked and often folded at the tip. They have longer legs and are wider in the muzzle than the Border Collie.
Welsh Sheepdog Temperament
This breed is agile, active and energetic. They are active and intelligent dogs known for being loyal and protective of their family. Welsh Sheepdogs make good pets for families with kids and other pets.
As a working dog, they need an active family and love to be given a job. They are happiest when kept busy with walks, runs and activities. Dog agility trials, flyball and obedience competitions can provide fun activities and an opportunity for the Welsh Sheepdog to use their brains and abundant energy.
With their long history of herding, they are excellent at guarding livestock and property and will bark to alert their owners of any potential danger. Welsh Sheepdogs are loyal and protective of their family and home.
