Welsh Springer Spaniel illustrated by Jennifer Farley 800

Loving, affectionate and sometimes a little bit sensitive – here comes the beautiful Welsh Springer Spaniel.

History

The breed is thought to have originated in Wales, possibly from crosses between English Cocker Spaniels and Irish Water Spaniels. During the 17th century, these dogs were found in large quantities in Wales, and their descendants spread throughout Britain.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel was at one time known as the Welsh Starter. It was bred to flush out or “spring” game for hunters using falcons. Hence its current name “springer”.

The breed was first recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1906. After World War II, they were nearly extinct. Thanks to breeding programs, the breed has now been revived.

Appearance

Welsh Springer Spaniels are medium-sized dogs with a compact body. They are known for their silky red and white coat. The coat is medium length with gorgeous feathering on the tummy, legs, chest and ears.

The dense coat protects them from harsh weather conditions that their descendants would have experienced in the Welsh countryside.

They have long, hanging ears which gives them a soft and gentle expression. This breed is similar to other spaniels with long legs, broad heads and short noses.

Welsh Springer Spaniel Temperament

These dogs are affectionate and make great family pets. They are an intelligent high-energy breed and need lots of walks, runs and activities to prevent boredom and keep them happy.

These springers can be reserved around people they don’t know but are renowned for their loyalty and devotion to their humans.

They are good watchdogs – alert and watchful but not aggressive. They will let you know if there is a stranger around. Although they are aloof around strangers, they are crazy about their family and can live happily with other animals.
