History of the Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier’s history goes back to the 1800s when Scottish textile workers moved to Yorkshire, England. They brought a variety of terriers with them, which they used to control rats in textile factories.

The workers wanted a small dog capable of squeezing into small spaces, after the rats. Several breeds, including Dandie Dinmonts and Skye terriers, were cross-bred to create the Yorkshire Terrier.

The Kennel Club of England recognized the Yorkie in 1886. It has since become a well-loved choice among pet owners and one of the most popular Toy breeds in the U.S.

Appearance

Yorkies have long, flowing, silky coats which are similar to human hair. It can tangle easily if its not brushed regularly. The long hair is really for the show ring and many Yorkshire Terrier breeders recommend the “puppy cut”. This is basically the short, back and sides which is easy to maintain.

Their hair is dark blue or black with shades of tan or gold. The colour can change as the dog grows and ages.

Yorkies are fine-boned and physically fragile because of their small size. They are however typical terriers and love to chase anything that moves and will bark at strangers big and small.

Temperament

The Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most popular breeds in the world, and for good reason. These dogs are intelligent, friendly, gentle pooches. They love their humans and are devoted companions.

If left alone for too long, they can become bored or destructive. Yorkies are extremely inquisitive, and they want to explore everything life has to offer them. A daily walk is important to take care of their exercise needs.

Despite their tiny size, Yorkshire Terriers make good watchdogs. They are faithful friends to their families.

Yorkies are smart, curious, and independent. If you want a little dog that loves to play and learn, the Yorkshire Terrier may be the dog breed for you.
